Culture and Intensive English Program

UNI Entrance English Program

UNI Entrance English Program

What is it?

Through the UNI EEP, students who have been conditionally admitted to the University of Northern Iowa have the oppportunity to enroll in a 10-week online intensive English program through the UNI CIEP.

This virtual ten-week program will have two components: a Listening/Speaking course and Reading/Wringing Course. Students will meet a total of 3 hours daily (15 hours per week), with 1 hour and 30 minutes in a Reading and Writing course, and 1 hour 30 minutes in a Listening and Speaking course. Students should expect working on homework at least one hour per day.  Students will have a chance to visit with instructors during office hours that will be offered twice a week outside the class time.  Instructors will use eLearning and Zoom as online platforms for the classes. Likewise, instructors will require eBooks and textbooks that may be purchased online.

The skills taught in these courses reflect a high B1, B2 and, in a few instances, the C1 level on the CEFR scale which correlates to level 5 of the CIEP curriculum (intermediate level).  The overall goal is to cover language topics and skills that can help prepare students for success when they enroll in their UNI academic programs.

Students will take a diagnostic exam prior to the beginning of instruction.  Assessments will be administered regularly to check student progress.  Course grades and final exam grades will be administered at the end of the program.  These grades determine the path for students after completing this program. (See below for requirements.) Students will receive a holistic grade for the program.
