Programs offered by the UNI Culture and Intensive English Program enhance the quality of language instruction by providing hands-on opportunities for cultural enrichment. A variety of activities are provided to fulfill a variety of needs. Academic programs such as culture talks and lectures give students a chance to practice active listening and note-taking skills while listening to a local volunteer or professional speak about a topic of interest. Students have plenty of opportunities to practice conversation skills through exchanges with UNI classes and visits with retired seniors as well. Participation in the Conversation Partner Program, which includes weekly interaction with UNI students, helps learners maintain regular practice while gaining assistance in the process of adaptation to American culture. The International Friendship Program, a non-residential visitation program, connects students to the culture of their immediate community while trips to local cities allow them to grow in their knowledge of the state of Iowa and the United States in general. Students give back by volunteering through service-learning activities such as teaching children about their countries and engaging in conversation with nursing home residents. Activities such as these help UNI CIEP students build confidence as communicators and leaders and help the UNI CIEP fulfill its mission of comprehensive language and culture instruction.
